Divination & How it Works
What Is Divination?
At its core, divination is the practice of gathering insight or information by interpreting patterns, symbols, or signs that reflect the deeper structure of reality. It is not limited to one culture, belief system, or era. Across civilizations (both ancient and modern) humans have consistently turned to divination to understand fate, circumstance, timing, and meaning.
Because of this long and global history, divination has earned a reputation for being mysterious, profound, and frustratingly difficult to explain in logical terms. Many people are told that divination “can’t really be understood” or that it only works through blind belief. And while it’s true that divination doesn’t operate like conventional cause-and-effect reasoning, modern developments in both magickal theory and scientific thought allow us to describe how it works far more clearly than we once could.
The important thing to understand is this: regardless of the tool used (tarot cards, pendulums, candle flames, runes, charms, bones, or visions) the underlying mechanism behind divination is always the same.
Energy, Information, and Pattern
To understand divination, we need to talk briefly about energy; not mystical “far-away” energy, but the same concept of energy discussed in scientific spaces.
Reality itself is not static. Space, matter, and forces exist within a constantly interacting field. Energy is everywhere, interconnected like an immense web, and it is always exchanging information. Through interaction with other systems, energy takes on experience. Those experiences imprint patterns into the way energy behaves, flows, and responds.
This article is not meant to be a deep dive into physics or metaphysics, but what matters here is this idea: energy carries information, and that information exists as pattern. Divination does not invent information, it reads existing patterns.
Why Symbols Are Necessary
Here’s the key limitation: we cannot directly observe or record subtle energetic patterns with our senses. The human mind needs translation.
A useful analogy is an EKG machine. An EKG does not show you the physical heart beating. Instead, it measures electrical activity and converts it into waveforms on a screen; symbols that doctors are trained to interpret. Without those symbols, the information would be unusable.
Divination works in a very similar way.
Energetic patterns (whether in a person, a situation, or a future trajectory) cannot be directly measured. They must be captured and interpreted through symbolic systems so the mind can process them. Tarot imagery, candle movement, casting patterns, and oracle symbols all function as translation layers between subtle information and conscious understanding.
But Tarot Isn’t Plugged Into Anything…So What’s Being Measured?
This is where many people get stuck.
Divination tools are not physically attached to the subject, and they don’t measure anything mechanical. Instead, they operate by symbolic correlation.
When you ask a question and focus on a subject (such as yourself, a relationship, a job, or a future possibility) you are engaging that system energetically. Your body, consciousness, and attention act as an interface. The divination tool then becomes a symbolic structure that mirrors the energetic patterns present in the system you’re inquiring about.
You are not measuring a physical object. You are translating energetic structure into symbolic language. Think of it as converting raw data into English so your mind can understand it.
Interconnection: Why This Works at All
All energy is interconnected within the universe. A helpful visualization is a color spectrum. Each color has its own identity, yet they blend seamlessly into one another. Despite appearing separate, they are expressions of one continuous system.
Your physical body, your emotional field, your thoughts, your environment, and your future probabilities all exist within overlapping energetic fields that constantly interact. Information moves between these fields continuously, often too quickly and subtly for conscious awareness.
Physics gives us language for this through concepts like superposition (systems existing in multiple potential states at once) and entanglement (systems that remain linked regardless of distance). While divination is not quantum mechanics, these principles offer a useful metaphor: when systems interact, information transfers instantly and relationally. Divination is the act of reading that information.
Tarot as an Example
Let’s say a practitioner asks about the energy surrounding someone’s job and pulls the Ace of Pentacles. Nothing supernatural “made” that card appear.
Instead, the symbolic structure of the tarot aligned with the energetic structure of the situation. Just like an EKG waveform reflects the heart’s activity, the card reflects the energetic pattern present; often interpreted as opportunity, material growth, or the beginning of something tangible.
The practitioner then interprets that symbol based on experience, intuition, and context, translating pattern into meaning.
Reading the Future
When divination is used to explore the future, it is not predicting a fixed outcome. Instead, it is observing how present energies are likely to compound over time.
Energy builds. Small influences accumulate. Minor shifts create major divergence; what chaos theory refers to as compounding effect. Divination looks at where things are headed, given the current configuration.
Many practitioners describe this process as energy rising from an incredibly subtle level, moving through the subconscious, and finally reaching conscious awareness as insight, imagery, or sensation. From there, it manifests physically through choices, events, and circumstances. The internal and external worlds are always in conversation.
The Bigger Picture
This constant flow between inner energy and outer reality is always happening whether you’re aware of it or not. Divination simply makes the conversation visible.
The answers you seek are not distant, hidden, or unreachable. They exist within the same system you already inhabit. Divination helps bring those patterns into focus.
